Telluride Cabin

This mountain modern cabin is sited along the edge of a pristine alpine lake in Telluride, Colorado, framed by iconic peaks rising above 13,000 feet, including San Miguel Peak. The design responds directly to its dramatic high-altitude setting, balancing efficiency, sustainability, and experiential connection to the landscape.

A primary goal of the project was to create an efficient use of space while remaining mindful of construction costs in a remote mountain environment. The compact footprint is carefully organized to maximize functionality, minimize waste, and prioritize views to the lake and surrounding peaks from key interior spaces.

The building form and roof geometry are sculpted to open toward the landscape while simultaneously addressing the realities of heavy snowfall. Sloped roof planes are oriented to shed snow safely away from primary entries and walkways, keeping circulation areas dry and accessible throughout the winter months. A covered carport with increased clear height accommodates a high roof Sprinter van and is designed to remain snow free upon arrival, eliminating the need for immediate snow removal in severe weather conditions.

Sustainability strategies are integrated throughout the design. Passive solar principles inform building orientation, glazing placement, and roof overhangs to optimize winter solar gain while providing summer shading. High performance envelope systems, durable materials suited for alpine conditions, and thoughtful daylighting further reduce energy demand and enhance interior comfort.
